Who is God?

Renowned scientists already consider that the Universe, being so perfect, was created by a Superior Force, which is called and known by many as “God.” But does He have a human shape? Does He have chosen people? Is He vengeful? Where is He? Is the Creator of the Universe present in just one religion? To this thought-provoking topic the Religion of God, of the Christ, and of the Holy Spirit1 presents its own contributions.

When Jesus, the Ecumenical Christ, the Divine Statesman was talking to the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s Well, He taught her that “God is Spirit” (the Gospel according to John 4:24), a revelation that in itself is contrary to the idea of an anthropomorphic god, created in the image and likeness of an as-yet-imperfect human being; someone who has white hair, wrinkles and is selfish and angry. On this subject José de Paiva Netto, the President-Preacher of the Religion of the Third Millennium writes in his book, Reflexões da Alma [Reflections of the Soul], on page 135: “One of the biggest obstacles to be overcome by Human Beings in the great journey towards understanding God, from the point of view of Science, is to think about what they are researching: about What or Whom? Or about God Who and/or What? (not a simple what, like a can in the street or a piece of torn paper), but a Divine What, which when Science deciphers Him, it will open up horizons in multiple dimensions of the quintessential Wisdom and Morality. . . .”.

In his “Poem of the Divine God,” Alziro Zarur (1914-1979), the late proclaimer of the Religion of Universal Love, defined God as:

Poem of the Divine God

The God who is Perfection and of whom I try
To sing about in verses of sincerity
I never saw Him, just as at no time
Have I seen the wind or electricity.

But this God, who is my eternal breath,
A God of Love, of Justice, and of Goodness,
Although I do not see Him, yet I truly feel Him,
Like the electricity and like the wind.

I feel Him in the purifying craving,
In the renewing manifestation
Of Beauty, Purity, and Affection.

I talk to Him in ineffable prayers,
Surrounded by indescribable vibrations
That bring me flashes of Perfection. . . .

The Goodness—which the sins do not consume—
From the Divine Spirit to His children:
God always descends to man, His son,
When man ascends to God, his Father!

Because I believe in this immortal God
Who protects the extremely imperfect Humanity:
God of an inaccessible Perfection
To the most fallible human inquiry.

GOD IS LOVE

When talking about God, the Origin of everything, John the Evangelist defined Him as “Love” in his First Epistle 4:16. To shed light on this statement, which is so simple but at the same time so profound, the president-preacher of the Religion of Universal Love points out in his book Spiritual Guidelines of the Religion of God, of the Christ, and of the Holy Spirit, volume 3, page 312: “God is Spirit, revealed Jesus. Before being seen He is to be experienced in the human intimacy as Love! The Face of the Supreme Creator can only be identified in the Soul of His creatures: Love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater Love than this: to lay down his own life for his friends, as Christ taught us. That is the Face of God: the more we love, the more He manifests Himself in us.”

The noble Dr. Bezerra de Menezes, spirit, also comments on this topic in the World Revolution of the Spirits of Light: “God is the most evolved of Spirits, the sum of all Goodness known and existing, which is transformed into the word Love. Therefore, God, the Entity, is no longer a single Being [as if He were a human being], but the very existence of the supreme collocation of the Universe. Everything that is constituted in the Universe is God [not in a reference to pantheism], because the Creator is made from this synergetic material called Love. Love is the conclusion of everything. It is the Supreme Life. It is the Supreme Being. So, He is the Entity Love; and love at the highest level of knowledge, reasoning, and interpretation” (magazine Jesus Está Chegando! [Jesus is Arriving!] issue 117, page 37).

For this reason, it is understood that God, in other words, Love, is found throughout the Universe. He is not restricted to one religion, to a field of human knowledge, or to a select group of people. God is everywhere, as He is within us (the Gospel of Christ according to Luke 17:21), in that good part we cultivate internally and through the Good Actions we carry out! This is the Divine Being who rules, governs, and controls the cosmos, while respecting the free will of His evolving creatures.

And that’s why we don’t see Him as a punishing, vengeful god. In fact, as far as Divine Justice is concerned, Paiva Netto says: “It is not God who punishes. We punish ourselves by transgressing His Law—again and again. In Eternal Matters, we should not wish to repeat the old habit of human impunity. This awful vice causes terrible consequences, because it is a great incentive to commit a crime. Or didn’t you know that? You know it only too well and lament the fact,” extract from the book, Jesus, a Dor e a origem de Sua Autoridade — O Poder do Cristo em nós [Jesus, the Pain and Origin of His Authority – The Power of Christ within us], page 256.

Therefore, if we want to fully understand this Divine Love we must respect the recommendations that come from the Heavenly Father for our own happiness. It is necessary, above all, to experience this feeling in a more sublime way, by constantly doing good, thus making our own existence and the existences of others better. Finally, we emphasize this reflection by the president-preacher of the Religion of Universal Love: “The Face of God is Love. The more we love, the more He manifests Himself in us.”
